Advancing Healthcare Through Innovative Medical Technologies
Value of Medical Technology
As a part of MEDEC's ongoing advocacy efforts, we have developed a variety of materials that help to tell the story about the value of medical technology to improve patient outcomes and and contribute to health system sustainability. This page compiles those materials and will be updated as new materials are released.
About MEDEC - A document that describes MEDEC and the Canadian Medical Technology Industry.
MEDEC's Strategic Framework - One page graphic highlighting MEDEC's four Strategic Framework - Supporting Canadian Innovation, Demonstrating the Value of Technology, Promoting Strategic Procurement and Shaping the Canadian Environment.
Research Paper - The Innovation Dilemma: Achieving Value, Health Outcomes and contributing to the New Economy
This 2017 report, The Innovation Dilemma: Achieving Value, Health Outcomes and Contributing to the New Economy, describes the current state of medical technology in Canada and explores how medical technology innovation contributes to improved health outcomes and the new economy.
At the 2017 MEDEC MedTech Conference, we were pleased to release part one of a white paper outlining an initiative MEDEC is collaborating on with health system partners in Alberta (Alberta Health Services’ Strategic Clinical Networks and Alberta Innovates) focusing on the adoption of innovation. The white paper, The SCN-MEDEC Initiative: A Systems Approach in the Management of Health Technology – Part 1: Necessity, Design and Approach, explores some of the challenges with the current approach to the adoption of innovative medical technologies in Canada and presents an alternate approach that the partners have taken that seeks to overcome these challenges.
Inspired by the ground-breaking collaborative work between Alberta’s Strategic Clinical Networks (SCNs) and MEDEC to validate a needs-based, system focused approach to adopting and managing innovation, a multidisciplinary working group was established by MEDEC in 2016. The group’s mandate was to define and create simple principles which would capture the key elements of a value-based approach to the management of products and solutions in the health care system. To attain a common and balanced perspective, the working group consisted of innovative public and private sector leaders from clinical and business enterprise departments across Canada. The process involved researching existing theories, practices and concepts and then identifying the common and vital elements for change. The resulting principles highlight the key areas of focus and serve as a guide and gauge against which industry and our health care partners can measure progress.
MEDEC is the national association representing the medical technology industry in Canada. Our members are committed to providing safe and innovative medical technologies that enhance the quality of patient care, improve patient access to health care, and help enable the sustainability of our publicly-funded health care system. We are committed to supporting the growth of a strong and vibrant medical technology industry that contributes to Canada’s innovation economy.
