MEDEC Statement on Health Canada's Medical Devices Action Plan

Toronto, December 20, 2018 – MEDEC, the national association representing Canada’s Medical Technology Companies, issued the following statement on Health Canada’s Medical Devices Action Plan:

Patient safety is our industry’s top priority and all that we do is viewed through that lens. As indicated by Health Canada, our country has some of the most stringent medical device regulations in the world and the medical technology industry has an extremely strong track record of safety. Consider the millions of medical devices implanted in Canadians and the devices used every day that are saving and improving lives.

Our industry strives to provide the safest devices possible and we have supported measures, such as Vanessa’s Law, which have enhanced the medical device regulatory environment in Canada.

We support continual improvement to processes and regulatory requirements that will enhance patient safety and patient confidence in medical devices in Canada.

We commend Health Canada’s patient-centred approach in the announced measures and their commitment to engage with all stakeholders as further details around these measures are released.
