Vitamin D Blood Tests Could Lose Ontario Funding

Many studies suggest that people who take vitamin D supplements have a lower overall risk of premature death. The Ontario government is thinking of cutting provincial funding for routine vitamin D tests which have exploded in popularity with the wake of studies suggesting many Canadians are not getting enough (vitamin D) to maintain their health. Raising the awareness about the dangers of vitamin D deficiency has led to a dramatic increase in testing, including over 700,000 people in Ontario who took the test in 2009. This is 20 times the number who took the test in 2004. On the other hand, higher levels of vitamin D are associated with lower risk of breast and colon cancer, some cardiovascular diseases and diseases like Multiple Sclerosis.
