MEDEC Calls for National Medical Device Strategy in Letter to Finance Minister

In a pre-budget submission sent to the Minister of Finance, James Flaherty, last week MEDEC urged the Government of Canada to invest in policies and processes that will allow the innovative medical device industry to thrive in Canada and stimulate the economy. MEDEC asked specifically for:

  • Establishment of a National Medical Device Strategy;
  • Provision of fair and reasonable Health Canada cost recovery fees for the Medical Device Industry.
  • Increased resources for the Medical Device Bureau at Health Canada to improve medical device review times and to regulate the reuse of single-use medical devices.

MEDEC also requested that the 2011 Federal Budget include a process to engage the global medical device industry through MEDEC to leverage the industry’s infrastructure, expertise and corporate programs and that the Federal Government commit to providing Health Canada’s Medical Devices Bureau with sufficient budget for additional staff dedicated to medical device reviews to ensure timely review of medical device license applications and sufficient resources to extend regulatory oversight to the reuse of single use medical devices.
