Advancing Healthcare Through Innovative Technologies and Devices

Sheila Fraser, the Federal Auditor-General claims that it is impossible to say whether Canada’s medicare system is providing value for money because the governments are making little effort to measure performance. Ms. Fraser was speaking to delegates at the Canadian Medical Association’s General Meeting last week. She noted that there are “significant gaps in performance reporting so we don’t know if we’re getting good value for money.” Similarly, there is no way of knowing if the health system is sustainable because there has been a failure to invest in long-term projection, Ms. Fraser said. At the meeting, incoming president Dr. Jeff Turnbull served notice that sustainability of the health care system would be a major focus for his term.
